Planning: Double Page Spread Layout

This is the layout I am using for my final product. I had previously analysed a double page spread where one page only had a main image on it which I was going to base my product on. However, I had a look at some other double page spreads and the majority of them had a large image in the centre surrounded by text which looked very effective so this is why I have chosen this type of layout. The title of the article will be written on a diagonal to look even more interesting and eye-catching. I will use a smaller image in the top right corner of the page to break up the text as it could become overcrowded.

Planning: Contents Layout

This is the layout that I am basing my final product contents page on. The smaller images down the left side will over lap and be rotated towards different corners to make it look a little more interesting. These pictures will link in with the text to give a preview of what is to come in the magazine, yet they will not have their page numbers beside them but they will be in chronological order.

Planning: Cover Layout

This is the layout for my final magazine cover. As you can see I have greatly based this layout on a previous mock up I had created. I thought this specific mock up was the most interesting whilst giving just enough information about the rest of the magazine. The smaller images will show previews of what is in this magazine and the text around the main image will also give information. The masterhead will be on a slight angle down to the right for effect. The main image will be the largest image on the cover as all other conventional magazines are.

Planning: Exploring Colour Schemes

Now I have chosen a font type and masterhead title I can continue my research by exploring colour schemes for my masterhead. Below are the sumarised colour schemes I have chosen to be surveyed by my fellow peers:

Below are the colour schemes from above used in the chosen font type and title followed by my target audiences feedback on their favourite colour schemes:
1) [4]
2) [3]
3) [5]

4) [6]

5) [2]

6) [3]

7) [8]
8) [9]

As you can see the results were pretty close between colour scheme 7 and colour scheme 8, just 1 vote away from a draw. Colour scheme 8 is very sophisticated and appears to be quite neutral and is not targeted specifically at one gender. I think this is a good choice chosen by those who I surveyed because colour scheme 7 uses a lot of colours which could overwhelm the pages and look more like a poster than a magazine.

Planning: Exploring Masterhead Titles

For my final coursework piece I have explored some different masterhead titles I could use for my magazine cover. I created a survey and asked another 40 of my chosen target audience to produce feedback on the one they prefered. The results are as shown below:

1. Boogie [0]
2. Indie Groove [6]
3. Music Matterz [9]
4. Dance [1]
5. The Beat [2]
6. Jump & Jive [3]
7. Funky Fever [2]
8. Base [3]
9. Rave [4]
10. Jammin [2]
11. Poptastic [3]
12. Boom Boom [5]

As you can see from my results there is another clear winner of "Music Matterz" which was closely followed by "Indie Groove" (my personal favourite). I am quite pleased with the results as I have already created a mock up using that title to give the audience an idea of how it will look. The next step is to find a suitable colour scheme for both the name and font type being used.

Planning: Exploring Logo Fonts

I am currently exploring different types of fonts to use for my main project peice (a music magazine) and have asked 40 people to chose just one in order to give me a definate winning font type. Below are the results from my survey:
[3]

[2]

[0]

[8]

[2]

[3]

[3]
[4]
[3]
[3]
[3]
[6]
As you can see from my results there is a clear winning font type called "Bremen Bd Bt" which 8 people voted for. The majority of font types in the survey were very recognisable ones such as Loki Cola that is used for the Coca Cola drink, I used these for the fact that the audience can recognise them easily and therefore wonder what the magazine is about. I feel like I can do a lot with the chosen font type as it is easy to then go on and chose a colour scheme.

Planning: Photographs

Below are some of the photographs I took for my coursework magazine with their altered images to show the transformation.

This image might be used on the contents page in the place of Britney Spears from a white contents page draft I created earlier. As you might have seen, the images are quite similar because I used inspiration from an image of Britney which I found on the internet. This picture above still needs to be flipped horizontally before being placed on my contents page.

This photograph could possibly be used as the main image on my double page spread as it can be placed dead centre of the two pages. I wanted to make the image more eye catching and noticeable so I used a radial blur around the edge to focus on Becky and used a spherical pastel coloured background to help direct the attention to the photograph.

As you have already seen on a front cover draft, I have used a medium close up of Becky holding her bag, but I thought about experimenting with other camera shots and tested out this one above. A long shot shows her whole body and quite importantly her stance which will attract the audiences attention the most. This image can be incorporated into the film strip better as her legs can easily be positioned behind the smaller images and can then be seen at the very bottom of the page, whereas the medium close up will just get cut off.
