Planning: Mock Up 4

This is my second mock up which I have produced to explore the colours, fonts and layout for my overall magazine cover. I first began with a black and white gradient background (as shown below) which led me on to trying out different colours to see what effect it had on the cover.

I chose the name "Electric" as it was the first thing I thought of when lookin at the background colour and style.

The filmstrip at the bottom was used to show the bands that are appearing in the magazine. The use of fade was to add effect to both the images and the overall cover as it looks like the filmstrip is slightly curved round the magazine.

I positioned the main image over all the other images to show that he is the most important on the page.

I used quite a few gradients for both the background and the masterhead as solid colours seem to be boring especially for this type of magazine. I decided to use dull blacks, greys and whites as the colour scheme with a shocking blue colour to grab the readers attention.

I converted the scouting for girls star into black and white before placing on my magazine mock up as the colours he is wearing would completely lose the effect of the eye catching, schocking blue colour on top of the black and white background.

Planning: Mock Up 1

This is my first idea for the front cover of my magazine. In my opinion, I think the name "Rave 'n' Babes" sounds like its a "lads" magazine and so I need more ideas on a name for it. I'm not quite sure about the colour scheme either yet so if anyone has any ideas please post a comment below, thanks!

Preliminary Product: Contents Page

Title: I chose to make the title of this page quite big in order for it to be easily seen by readers and for them to recognise the page they are reading. I continued with the same colour scheme as on the front cover, blue and yellow, to be consistent. When looking at my contents page on publisher, the blue letters in the title seemed clearer and easier to read. However, since uploading it to blogger, the colour of the letters blends in with the background colour making it harder to read and less clear. I perhaps could have used a slightly lighter colour for the background in order for the title to stand out.

Images: I decided to produce a magazine of a sports college and so the images are based on different sporting events which go on around the school. I used a range of background on the pictures to show the facilities the school owns such as, netball courts, indoor badminton courts and the astro turf. The second picture seems to be quite dull as the day I took it was just after it had rained. Next time, I should think more about the time of day I take the picture and think more about the lighting.

Logo's: The choice of logo's was based upon the magazines masterhead. BHS stands for Biddulph High School and the sports college logo reflects upon the type of school it is, a sports college. The BHS logo is consistent with the colour scheme of my preliminary project and so fitted perfectly with this page.

Extras: I decided to use extra little shapes to enhance the page and make it look interesting. The use of jigsaw peices was the reflect on the fact that this is a school's magazine and to add a little creativity. The numbers inside the jigsaw peices show the page number of where the picture can be located later on in the magazine. I used a star shape to enhance the page numbers again in the contents page details list.

Preliminary Product: Front Cover

Title: I chose to make the masterhead of my magazine the largest text on the screen so it is recognised as being the title of the magazine. I chose blue and yellow as the colour scheme as the colours are bright and work well with each other. The font used is unusual and so readers will be able to clearly recognise this school magazine. The "Specialist Sports College" was written in a script font to show how sophisticated this school is. I chose to use yellow for this as it is the brightest colour to use and so stands out from the background.

Images: I decided to create a school sports college magazine and so the majority of events which take place are all based on sport, hence the three different sporting photographs at the bottom of the page. However, to show that this was not just a simple sports magazine, I used a main image of students working hard to reflect that this is still a school magazine. The smaller images at the bottom are surrounded by yellow and blue lines to make them stand out from the background and not to appear merged as well as being consistent with the colour scheme. The background image was taken in a school computer room which has good lighting as it was from directly above the students. No artificial lighting was used as you can see from the top left of the image being slightly shaded; this did not affect my image.

Logo's: The BHS logo was used as the jigsaw peices represent schooling and the colour scheme is consistent with my chosen colour scheme, which was origional based upon that logo.

Research: Analysis of Spread 1

Genre: RnB

Layout and Mise-on-Scene: The layout of this spread is quite successful as the main image is a long shot of Ciara which has been convientally placed slightly to the right of the page. This is so the publisher can add part of the article to the left of her in line with her body, which creates a wonderful effect. On the second page, the article has been written in an origional layout with the image top left of the text and the text written in two columns.

Colour Scheme and Fonts: The blue gradient background has been used to attract readers to the page and to show the main focus of this particular page - the image of Ciara. Her dark coloured jeans, light coloured top and brown hair allows her to stand out clearly from the blue background which was used for this purpose. The white text was used to stand out from the blue background and also to be recognised at the side of the image. The colour scheme on the other side of the double page spread is some what reversed from the first page as there is a lighter blue background with dark blue text. The second, smaller image of Ciara has a dark blue background which is the same as the background colour on the first page so the publisher has continued onto the second page with this colour scheme but then reversed it for effect. There are three fonts used on this double page spread; one to clearly state who the celebrity is "Ciara", one for the little insight to the article "She's got the vocals, moves and looks and works them to the top" and one for the article text.

Research: Contents Page Analysis 2

Genre: Rock Magazine

Layout and Mise-en-Scene: The use of large images on the contents page is to attract the reader to the page and show the genre of the magazine more clearly. The layout of this page is quite simple and bland as the images are placed around the edge with just one box for the textual content. The images relate to the type of genre as the majority of people in them are not smiling and are dressed in dark, dull colours which aso reflects the mood of the 'rock' genre. In two of the images is a yellow background to enhance the dark colours of their clothes which too enhances the rock genre again. The top left image is showing a man smling which is not stereotipically what the audience expects to see as it is a rock magazine. However, this could show that even those interesting in rock can have fun at times. The use of one girl being in an image on her own is to state that rock magazine are not just for lads to read but also girls.

Colour Scheme and Fonts: The colour scheme in the images is mostly dark and dull to represent the rock genre of the magazine. Contrasting to the background of the images is a white background of the page in order to enhance the textual content and the images. A white background is simple yet effective in a rock magazine as it brightens up the page and so the readers can clearly establish the whereabouts of the content on the page. The page numbers and descriptions are both written in black as that contrasts with the white background to clearly state the information. The use of pink sub-headings is to add a little colour to the page and so readers don't think a rock magazine is purely for lads to read. "Kingsize" has been written in bold to clearly show that is the title to the contents page and has not been written in italics to show it is the main heading of the page; the underline to "Kingsize" also represents this.

Genre: Lifestyle

Layout and Mise-en-Scene: The layout of this magazines contents page is quite simple as the page numbers and headings are positioned on the left side with photography on the right. This reflects with the type of magazine it is as homelife is portrayed as being simple and calm which is the impression this magazine gives. The curved edges surrounding the images has been used for a calming effect.

Colour Scheme and Fonts: The basic colour scheme of a white background and a plain red line under the "Contents" heading is again used for simplicity. A white background will enhance the content of the page as it has done with the images on the right hand side. Red page numbers are used to continue with the regular colour scheme and calm mood. The page numbers on the images are big, bold and white to stand out from the darker colours on the pictures. The sub-headings use a continuous font, size and colour in order to be separate from the article headings and page numbers below them. "Contents" has been written in a plain, simple and calming font to once again reflect the mood of the magazine.

Research: Magazine Analysis Cover 3

Genre: R'n'B and Hiphop

Masterhead: The conventional title, "Vibe", is only half visible as the main image is over lapping. This suggests the magazine is well known and therefore does not need to be prioritised over the image. A bright, vibrant orange has been chosen to grab readers eyes as it stands out from the off-white background.

Colour Scheme and Fonts: Two pale colours, orange and blue, are used to calm the mood of the magazine and to reflect with the R'n'B genre. Black and white font colours are used to describe the hip-hop articles of the magazine in contrast to the R'n'B. This may be to clearly outline the different types of genres this magazine covers aswell as equally stand out from each other. "Vibe" magazine has gone with the traditional 'arial black' font on the cover, all in upper case letters except the title. This is an unique technique used to distinguish this title from another one.

Mise-en-Scene: The article headings are positioned around the main image to show the importance of Janet Jackson. The effect of the camera used in the main image is to enhance the "First Ever Photo Issue!" of the magazine, which is positioned on the master head. Janet Jackson's clothing relates to the music she performs and is ideal for the genre of the magazine. The choice of an off-white background was quite risky for the magazine as Janet Jackson is wearing a white vest top, which covers about 20% of the overall cover. However, by choosing an off-white colour enhances the pure white in which she is wearing so overall works well.

I have found this magazine cover to be very inspirational to me as I will base my own cover on the layout and positioning of the main image and text; this cover shows it has depth as the main image appears to be behind the article text yet infront of the masterhead, which is quite effective.

Research: Magazine Analysis Cover 2

Genre: Pop

Masterhead: The conventional title "Sugar" has purposely been placed infront of the main image of Rihanna in order to be recognised by the target audience. This shows that it is not a well known magazine, which therefore needs to clearly state it's name. A pale pink has been used for the masterhead to reflect upon and attract their target audience, which I think is teenage girls.

Colour Scheme and Fonts: The colour scheme used mostly for this magazine is pink and white, with some black and yellow text to grab the readers attention and to highlight certain important words. The white background is used to enhance the main image of Rihanna and the shadow used is to add the effect of the image being real. A range of different fonts has been used to grab the readers attention and reflect on the word used, for example "Juicy" has been written in orange and italics to enphasise the article. Specific words have been created in bold print to enhasise and grab the readers attention, for example "boobs".
Mise-en-Scene: The main image of Rihanna has been taken as a medium close up to show the upper part of her body and her head, which then fills around 50% of the overall magazine cover. The article headings and insights have been positioned around the page covering Rihanna's body but specifically not her head as the readers will need a clear image of her in order to recognise the celebrity. The masterhead has been conveniently placed in the top centre of the page, overlapping the main image in order to stand out above the rest of the cover. This suggests this is not a widely recognised magazine so therefore need to clearly show the title.

Research: Magazine Analysis Cover 1

Genre: Pop

Masterhead: The title "Smash Hits" has been partially covered by the main image, an advertisement and "New Look!" to suggest this is also a well known magazine, which doesn't need to clearly show the masterhead for it to be recognised. The masterhead is in lower case yet clearly still the largest on the page and is conventionally positioned in the centre.

Colour Scheme and Fonts: The overall colour scheme used are two shades of pink, light and dark. This immediatly informs readers of the content in the magazine, which also suggests the target audience they were expecting (young, female teenagers). A white outline has been used around the font to enhance it and so they do not blend in with the background as 50% of it is also pink. The majority font type used again is 'arial black' with the exception of the language used to involve the reader such as "You'll love" and of course the conventional masterhead.

Mise-en-Scene: The main image is positioned off centre to show the audience that there is more than one main article to read in this magazine and so shares the cover with other larger images. On this pop magazine there is a greater quantity of images on the front cover than headings in order to catch the audiences eye as they would prefer to look at images rather than read long headlines. The four articles advertised on the front cover are positioned in each corner, slightly over-lapping others.
